My name is Mark Dellar, in 2019 approximately one month after my 25th birthday I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I was not aware at the time but, testicular cancer is unfortunately quite common and affects many teens and young men aged between 15 and 35 years. I’m a quick-witted kind of bloke and never been known as a sad sack, I kept the doctors on their toes with never-ending upbeat puns about my unfortunate situation. I have undergone a radical inguinal orchiectomy (I got a nut cut out), I was lucky enough to have been diagnosed early and avoided needing to go through chemotherapy or radiation therapy. I am still having tests every 6 months to make sure things aren’t on the rocks. Since then my wife and I have had a beautiful 8 months old girl, and we both have to be on the ball to look after her!
My father Steve and I have applied and been accepted to participate in the Mystery Box Rally. We applied for the 2020 rally but it was cancelled due to COVID-19. We were put on the stand by list for the 2021 rally, we received a call from Mystery Box on Monday the 10th of May letting us know that some of the teams have had to pull out.
So now the challenge is to raise $3,500 and more by the end of July. We have already paid our nomination fees and are doing the final things to the car to be ready to go.
About the Just have’n “A BALL” team;
Steven and Mark are a father and son team that love old cars and Just haven “A BALL” When one of Steve’s sons Mark was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer they decided to NUT out a plan to enter the rally. They will be restoring an old HQ Holden a full NUT and bolt restoration for the rally. Steve has restored a few cars in the past and Mark knows that he can get a bit TESTIE. Steve will have to reach into his FULL BAG of tricks to get the car finished in time. Mark is a glass half full sort of bloke, he’s no sad SACK so he will be right there working with him to get it finished in time.
This rally will have us driving a car that is 25 years or older along outback. We will do approximately 2,500kms in 5 days! We set off from Rockhampton & return
back to Rockhampton 5 days later, each day in between is a mystery, we have no idea where we will be headed until the morning of! In order for us to participate we need to raise $3,500 and every dollar raised goes to the Cancer Council! We would very much appreciate it if you could donate to the cause & help us on our journey!
Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5-day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."
